Foreigners charged with violent crimes
Violent crime is rising sharply in Oslo, and half of those charged are of foreign extraction. Police are alarmed by the trend and say that many of the incidents occur in gang conflicts.
Police chief Anstein Gjengedal presented the crime statistics for the year 2000 on Thursday.
Crimes aimed at gaining quick cash were up, with burglaries declining in favor of robberies of individuals and taxi drivers. Rape and attempted rape cases are at an all time high, up 50 percent from the year before.
